My Approach

janie mcmahan counseling - austin, tx

Above all, I want to remove any discomfort you may have about seeing a therapist. I offer you a comfortable, safe, and non-judgmental place to explore the issues that bring you to see me.

Collaborating with you to identify your goals for therapy, and your expectations of the therapeutic process, is the first step I will take when you meet with me. I will tailor your treatment to your specific needs and concerns.

The Gottman Method of couples therapy is the foundational approach I use when working with couples, and in parent coaching. I have also been trained to use Emotionally Focused Therapy with couples and individual clients. I use EMDR Therapy in my work with clients with trauma histories and PTSD.  I have also received training in DBT and incorporate this treatment approach with my clients who have trauma histories, depression, substance abuse and addiction, and eating disorders. Attachment theory and family systems theory also informs the work I do with individuals and couples. Integrating mindfulness practices, cognitive behavioral therapy, and narrative therapy are other approaches I employ to enhance the healing process with clients.
